Scribes has more than 2,000 members, including many law
schools and courts that have joined as institutional members.
Scribes is headed by a board of legal-writing experts, law-school
deans, judges, and outstanding lawyers.
Scribes' main publication, The
Scribes Journal of Legal Writing, was the first journal in the field and remains
the premier journal of legal writing. Cooley sponsors the
production, printing, and mailing of the Scribes
Journal,
which is distributed to some 9,000 readers.
In addition,
Scribes publishes a quarterly newsletter, The
Scrivener.
And it gives three annual awards for legal writing and advocacy — awards
that are coveted by authors, publishers, and law schools.

Cooley professors are heavily involved in Scribes. Professor Norm Plate is the organization's executive director. Professor Joseph Kimble is editor in chief of the Scribes Journal. Professor
Jane Siegel is the editor of The
Scrivener. And Professor
Otto Stockmeyer is a past president of Scribes, having served
in that capacity from 2005-2007.
Membership is opened to any member
of the legal profession. |
