Professor Gershel joined the full-time faculty in 2008 after having served the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of Michigan in Detroit for nearly 30 years. He was most recently Chief of the Criminal Division from 1989-2008.
During that time, he served as Acting United States Attorney, 1989-1990 and 2000-2001, First Assistant U.S. Attorney/Criminal Chief (1994-2003), Interim U.S. Attorney (2001 and 1993-1994), Chief of Special Prosecutions (1988-1989), Chief of General Crimes (1986-1987), and Assistant Chief, Narcotics Unit (1984-1985).
Professor Gershel was also Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice, in 2000. In that capacity he supervised the Justice Department’s Fraud Section, Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section and the Campaign Finance task Force.
Professor Gershel has served as both an adjunct professor and a visiting professor at Cooley.
He served as Chair of the U.S. Federal Magistrate Judge Selection Committee (2008), as chair of the Criminal Chiefs Working Group, U.S. Department of Justice (2004-2007), as Chair of the Hearing Panel, Michigan Attorney Discipline Board (1991-present), as a member of the State Bar Committee on Grievance (1996-1997) and the Federal Court’s Local Rules (1991). He was a Master of the Bench, American Inn of Court, University of Detroit Mercy School of Law (1992-1995).
Professor Gershel has received several recognitions, including the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Moot Court Alumni Member of the Year (2007), a Fellow, Michigan State Bar Foundation (1997), the Department of Justice Director’s Award for Superior Performance in a Managerial Role (1994), the Leonard R. Gilman Award, Federal Bar Association “Outstanding Practitioner in Criminal Law” Award (1992), the Department of Justice Special Achievement Award (1989), and the Department of Justice Director’s Award for Superior Performance as an Assistant U.S. Attorney (1986).
He is a frequent speaker on criminal law-related issues. He teaches Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, and White Collar Crime
