Barry was a staff writer for the "Boise Weekly" in Boise, Idaho, covering local politics, crime, and government. He decided he wanted to become a lawyer so he could make a "significant difference in society," safeguarding the rights of others through litigation or legislative drafting.
Barry knew from the first day of class that "Cooley was the right place for me ... I made the closest friends that I have, both students and professors. I know I can call a professor for help at anytime just like I could when I was a student."
Networking was the key to his current position as an associate at Adkison, Need & Allen P.L.L.C. He sought relationships with practitioners and professors whose interests were related to property law, land use, real estate, and the environment. He became involved with the Oakland County Bar Association and attended Municipal Law Committee meetings where he met many excellent practitioners, including his current employer. "With personal relationships and good recommendations, I was able to leverage my way into internships, clerkships, and finally post-graduate employment."
Barry's practice is primarily litigation focused on real estate, business and land use. He writes briefs for the state circuit and appellate courts. He represents municipalities, organizations of all sizes, and individuals in resolving disputes.
As a volunteer lawyer, Barry has represented individuals in family law proceedings and appeals to the Department of Veterans Affairs. He also serves as lead counsel to the Friends of Eliza Howell Park, Inc., in on-going litigation over ownership of a Detroit park. He recently received the Community Legal Resources Volunteer of the Year Award for his pro bono work.

"At Cooley I worked harder in law school than I ever had before and I emerged a different, better person. Cooley's emphasis on writing is extremely important . Cooley does an excellent job refining that ability. Cooley's two required writing courses exposed me to a variety of types of legal drafting that made transitioning to practice much smoother."
