Second Annual Michigan Innovation and IP Legal Writing Competition
The State Bar of Michigan, Intellectual Property Section and the Thomas M. Cooley Law School Graduate Program in Intellectual Property Law are pleased to announce the Second Annual Michigan Innovation and IP Legal Writing Competition. The Competition will recognize outstanding student legal scholarship in the fields of innovation law, intellectual property law, and related subjects. Prizes include cash awards for first, second and third place submission, plus publication in the Section's IPLS Proceedings journal. The deadline for submissions is May 15, 2012.
The Competition is open to students at any law school in the State of Michigan. Cooley Law Partners with Oakland University in "i2B" Program - Student Entrepreneurs.
Prof. David C. Berry, Director of Cooley's Graduate Program in Intellectual Property Law, announces collaborative program offered by Oakland University and Cooley to support aspiring entrepreneurs. The Ideas 2 Business Lab "i2B" will support student and faculty teams as they develop their business ideas, and provide access to diverse expertise from the business, technology, engineering and legal fields.
An Open House to launch the i2B program will be Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011 from 3:00 to 4:30 PM at Shotwell-Gustafson Pavilion on the OU campus. Cooley Law School students are invited to participate. RSVP to aaevent2@oakland.edu.
IP Law Now Available Online
June 22, 2011 - The Master of Laws in Intellectual Property Law may now, in addition to the traditional live classroom setting, also be obtained entirely online.
Students may now choose to attend classes in one or all of the following ways; (1) live, (2) through video conferencing at one of our branch campuses, (3) synchronously online, or (4) any combination that accommodates the student's schedule and preferences.
Through the use of innovative technology, classes are delivered to your location in real-time, using fully interactive video and audio through a synchronous web-based platform.
International Trademark Association (INTA) Annual Meeting
Professors David C. Berry and Gerald Tschura in addition to the Graduate Program Director, Catherine McCollum, attended the International Trademark Association (INTA) Annual Meeting in San Francisco on May 15th through May 18th, 2011. Cooley hosted an exhibition booth to showcase our LL.M. Programs in Intellectual Property Law and U.S. Legal Studies for Foreign Attorneys. While at the conference, Professor Tschura taught a class in International Trademark Law to young practitioners and Professor Berry organized and moderated two sessions at the second annual INTA Trademark Scholarship Symposium.

The Thomas M. Cooley Law School Graduate Program in Intellectual Property Law announces that William J. Coughlin will present its 2011 Distinguished Lecture in Intellectual Property and Innovation Law.
Mr. Coughlin is President and CEO, Ford Global Technologies, LLC. a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company responsible for managing all intellectual property matters of Ford across all brands on a global basis. Coughlin will deliver a lecture entitled "Innovation and Patents: Keeping the 'Fire of Genius' Burning Through the Next Decade." The program will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 with a registration at 5:30 p.m., lecture at 6:00 p.m. at the Cooley Law School Auburn Hills Campus, 2630 Featherstone Road, Auburn Hills, Michigan 48326.

Supreme Court Decides Bilski v. Kappos; Fate Of Business Method Patents Left In Doubt

Since the Bilski v. Kappos case was argued in November 2009, patent attorneys and information technology companies have waited for the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on whether or not so-called "business method" inventions, including computer-implemented processes, are eligible for patenting under the Patent Act. 35 U.S.C. § 1, et seq. Although the Court ruled unanimously on June 28, 2010 that the specific method at issue in Bilski was not eligible for patent protection, the Court opted for a narrowly reasoned decision. As a result, the ruling provides little guidance for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ("USPTO") and the courts to apply in determining patent eligibility in future cases. [read more ]
District Court Strikes Down Gene Patents

In a decision restricting patents claiming human genetic discoveries, a result that may have far-reaching effects the biotechnology industry, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York recently ruled that patents owned by Myriad Genetics claiming the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which are associated with an elevated incidence of breast and ovarian cancers, are invalid because they fail to claim eligible subject matter under 35 U.S.C. § 101.
