Tammy Asher

Professor Asher presented a seminar on Plain Language for the 2008 Michigan Family Planning Update in Grand Rapids. The program was attended by Title X providers in Michigan.

Professor Asher was appointed to serve as Vice President and Secretary of the Parkside by the Lakes Homeowners Association.

Professor Asher served as a volunteer at the Roosevelt Elementary School Fun Run, the Gretchko Elementary School Halloween Party, and serves as a weekly volunteer in a reading and writing workshop at Gretchko Elementary.

Professor Asher attended a fundraising breakfast for The Haven, an Oakland County domestic violence shelter.

Professor Asher provided financial support to a Pontiac youth in need.

Stevie Barachkov

Professor Barachkov involved her students in a service project to collect gift cards, hats, gloves and coats for homeless children in Macomb County.

David Berry

Professor Berry was quoted in a Law360 article about the recent Federal Circuit Court decision in In re Bilski, which concerns the patentability of business methods.

Karen Chadwick

Professor Chadwick was named “Favorite First Term Professor,” “Most Energetic Professor,” and “Most Approachable Professor,” in a poll taken by the Auburn Hills Student Bar Association.

Professor Chadwick took ten Cooley students to the Oakland County Bar Association’s October Inns of Court Program.

Professor Chadwick led a pet food/supplies drive for the Dearborn Animal Shelter. Through her efforts, more than 500 pounds of pet food and assorted pet supplies, toys and treats were donated by Cooley students, staff and faculty to the shelter.

Jerry Fisher

Professor Fisher has been elected President of the Oakland County Bar Foundation. As part of his duties, Professor Fisher authors a monthly column in the OCBA Laches Magazine, presides over meetings of the Board of Trustees, and attends meetings of the Foundation’s committees.

Professor Fisher co-authored a book on Zoning and Land Use which has been published by the Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

Professor Fisher served as emcee for an event on Municipal Law presented to Cooley students. Cooley alumni served as speakers for the event.

Professor Fisher attended a meeting of the Cooley Straits Committee of which he is a member.

Professor Fisher presented a Planning Law & Risk Management seminar for the Michigan Association of Planning.

Professor Fisher was a co-presenter at a seminar for the benefit of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys and the Public Corporation Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan.

Professor Fisher served as the emcee for a charity golf event in support of the North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy and attended an event for the Six Rivers Land Conservancy.

Professor Fisher attended a Board of Directors meeting for the Land Information Access Association, a non-profit public interest corporation.

Professor Fisher presented a seminar on Land Use for the Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

Professor Fisher served as a presenter at the Harvest Seminar for Oakland County Planning and Economic Development.

Professor Fisher participated in a meeting with representatives of Oakland University in promotion of joint programs and initiatives between Cooley and the University.

Professor Fisher attended the annual dinner of the Michigan Supreme Court Advocates’ Guild.

Professor Fisher assisted Washtenaw County with a project to develop a model ordinance for planned unit development.

Professor Fisher attended a meeting of the Public Corporation Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan.

Alan Gershel

Professor Gershel was awarded the Association of Former United States Attorneys “Exceptional Service Award.”

Professor Gershel spoke on corporate investigations to graduate students studying advanced auditing at Wayne State University.

Professor Gershel had an article published in the ABA’s Preview of U.S. Supreme Court Cases, October Term.

Professor Gershel was appointed by the U.S. Federal District Court to serve on the Merit Selection Committee for the appointment of a new federal magistrate judge.

Professor Gershel was tapped to head the transition team for Oakland County Prosecutor elect, former Court of Appeals Judge Jessica Cooper.

Lisa Halushka

Professor Halushka was published in the ABA’s Preview of U.S. Supreme Court Cases, October Term. Professor Halushka’s article is entitled, “Does the Good Faith Exception to the Exclusionary Rule Apply to Police Error?”

Professor Halushka participated with her students in Iraq Pac, a community service project to benefit deployed soldiers collecting items to send to the troops.

Professor Halushka worked with her classes to collect items for donation to CARE House, an Oakland County agency that provides services to child victims of sexual abuse and their families.

Martha Moore

Professor Moore attended the regular monthly meetings of the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission. Professor Moore serves, by appointment, as secretary of the Commission.

Professor Moore presented on the Attorney Grievance Commission and Dishonesty in the Practice of Law to the Oakland County Inns of Court.

Professor Moore conducted a seminar on Estate Planning at Elim Baptist Church in Detroit.

Professor Moore attended a meeting of the Board of Directors for the Straker Bar Association. Professor Moore is a member of the board.

Professor Moore presented on “Understanding the Disciplinary Process,” to the Straker Bar Association.

Lauren Rousseau

Professor Rousseau attended a fundraising event for The Haven, an Oakland County domestic violence shelter.

Professor Rousseau attended the Oakland County Bar Association’s Diversity Dinner.

Professor Rousseau participated in the planning and execution of a fundraising event for the benefit of Forgotten Harvest, an Oakland County food bank. The event was sponsored by the OCBA Public Service Committee of which Professor Rousseau is a member.

Professor Rousseau participated in the planning and execution of a People’s Law College, as part of her work with the OCBA Public Service Committee. Professor Rousseau recruited two of the speakers for the event.

Professor Rousseau had an article published in the ABA’s Preview of U.S. Supreme Court Cases, October Term.

Gina Torielli

Professor Torielli participated in the planning and execution of a field trip for law students to the Detroit Office of the IRS and the U.S. Tax Court. The day long event was sponsored by Cooley’s Graduate Program in Tax, the Cooley Tax Law Society and the Taxation Section of the State Bar of Michigan. Participating students toured the office of the IRS and met with Chief Counsel for the IRS. Students also toured the U.S. Tax Court and met the newest U.S. Tax Court judge. Students had lunch with members of the State Bar’s Taxation section who answered questions about their area of practice.

Professor Torielli worked with the president of the Detroit Chapter of the Tax Executives Institute (TEI) to have Cooley students attend TEI’s upcoming annual all day seminar on international tax and to become involved in the organization. TEI meets regularly with the Congress, the IRS, Revenue Canada and state tax departments on tax issues and reform. TEI submits position papers, testifies on behalf of its members and files amicus briefs on important tax related issues.

Joan Vestrand

Dean Vestrand placed a student in a volunteer position with the Oakland County Probate Court Administrator’s Office.

Dean Vestrand presented on Dishonesty in the Legal Profession at the October Oakland County Inns of Court. 10 Cooley students attended the program.

Dean Vestrand attended a meeting of the Oakland County Bar Association’s Youth Law Committee to commence planning for Youth Law Day 2009.

Dean Vestrand participated as a witness in the Oakland County Circuit Court’s Constitution Day Program.

Dean Vestrand presented on “Maximizing Success in a Difficult Economy” at the State Bar Annual Meeting. The presentation was sponsored by the State Bar’s Law Practice Management Section.

Dean Vestrand presented on “Setting Fees, Retainer Agreements and Actually Getting Paid” at ICLE’s Solo/Small Firm Institute held in conjunction with the State Bar Annual Meeting.

Dean Vestrand was awarded the State Bar of Michigan’s Champion of Justice Award at the State Bar Annual Meeting.

Dean Vestrand participated in a session of the State Bar Representative Assembly.

Dean Vestrand launched Cooley’s third year of the “Success on Saturdays” program with a Kick Off Barbeque at Pontiac Northern High School.

Dean Vestrand was invited to serve as Grand Marshal of Pontiac Northern’s 2008 Homecoming Festivities and in this capacity participated in the school’s homecoming parade and attended the football game.

Dean Vestrand planned and executed sessions of Success on Saturdays that included a showing of “The Freedom Writers Diary,” and discussion of the film; a trip to the Greenfield Village Museum; and a tour of Michigan State University.

Dean Vestrand arranged for 16 Cooley students and 19 Pontiac Northern students to attend the Oakland County Bar Association’s Diversity Dinner held at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. E. Christopher Johnson, General Counsel for GM North America was the keynote speaker at the event. During the event, Dean Vestrand awarded Pontiac Northern senior Sequoia Coleman with $500 in financial assistance donated for her benefit by Cooley students, staff and faculty as part of its “Cooley’s Angels” outreach.
